Making The Most of What You Have 

November 2016

The last Members’ Forum of the year was held at the Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia and was followed by the Clubs SA AGM . 

Against a backdrop of glistening calm waters and the picturesque marina, Members sat back and relaxed while hearing from experts in the industry.

Topics included:

  • Trade Promotions | What does your licence allow?
  • Optimising taste and profit | A live cooking demonstration and tasting
  • Using Social Media to engage with your audience
  • Boosting restaurant yield, revenue and profit

Our thanks go to Craig and his team at the CYCSA for hosting the event, the great option of pre-ordering lunches and for his entertaining presentation; Alex Bastian, a Senior Associate with DW Fox Tucker; Burt Admiral, CEO of H&L Australia and a huge thank you to Chris Baggaley and chef Damien Walsh for their ability to cope under pressure!  They did an admirable job of  presenting and running a live cooking demonstration despite having to relocate their ovens twice!  The food was very well received and enjoyed by all.

The 2016 AGM followed the Forum.  As the number of nominees did not exceed the number of vacancies,  Preston Stewart and Kym Flanagan were re-elected to the Board.

Renovate | Refurbish | Diversify  

February 2016

The February Members’ Forum was held at Club Marion and was a great opportunity for clubs to share their experiences of making improvements to their venues and for expert presenters to give tips and advice on what’s happening with industry trends.  

Abeo Design’s Emma and Mandy offered insight into the look and feel of a venue and what to look at when considering a renovation; Harold of Concept Collections spoke about the importance choosing furniture to create an appealing look to attract customers; Stoddart's Chris showcased spectacular kitchen designs, and emphasised the importance of safety and efficiency when running a business, and how to keep costs under control.

Michael Jackson from Lion Craft ran an excellent beer and cheese tasting session. He explained the processes behind matching the combination of flavours, and noted that cheese shouldn’t just be paired with wine; that beer also has its place with the cheese platter. 

David from Sandy Creek Golf Club (formerly Gawler Golf Club), and Merv from Murray Bridge RSL spoke about their recent club improvements.  Sandy Creek has gone through a complete rebrand and Murray Bridge RSL has travelled a long road to get to where it is now with its kitchen renovations, with a lot more work to come!

CBS provided valuable information on how your licence can be affected when renovating and expanding, and the Office of Recreation and Sport explained how to write an application when applying for funding for club projects and renovations.

Feedback from attendees was extremely positive with all saying they found it very helpful with many good suggestions, and that it was relaxed and informative.

Gaming Forum 2015

Clubs SA held its inaugural Gaming Forum at the SA Sea Rescue Squadron Barcoo Function Centre.

This provided an opportunity for Gaming Club Managers to discuss  the challenges they face as well as hear from keynote speakers on topics such as gaming trends and statistics, the new IGC monitoring system and running a profitable venue.

The relaxed and informal setting proved a great success and the feedback was positive with the Forum described as “very informative and instructive”.  We hope to hold more of these ‘themed’ forums in the coming year and encourage Club Managers to let us know of particular topics that would be of interest.

The Forum was also timely in that many of those attending had jointly contributed to Clubs SA’s submission to the State Government regarding the devastating effects a proposed increase to the concessional gaming machine tax rate would have had on many Clubs.  The value of working collaboratively to achieve a common goal was shown with the tax rate remaining unchanged in the State’s budget.  Read more on the submission here.
