Winners of our Clubs SA 2018 "Why my Club is Great" photo competition....

As you walk through the gates of the Port Adelaide Greek Orthodox Community Club you are instantly greeted with a community feel.

Invited by Maria and John, they were excited to welcome me when I arrived to deliver their winner’s prize.  A selection of beer and wine and a few little extra bar products – thanks to our corporate partners, CUB | Coopers | Growers Gate and Brown Brothers.

A quick tour of the amazing Orthodox Church started my visit before heading into the Community Club Room to deliver their winner’s prize, meet some of the members and take some photos.  The club is fortunate to have many long serving members with 40 plus years and this growing community is very proud of their facility.

It is easy to see Why their club is great!  Steeped in tradition, several members gather every Tuesday for lunch (sometimes up to 50 people!)  A great opportunity for the members to get together – 3 course lunch all for $5.  With accompanying delicious coffee!

The Community members work hand in hand for many causes and events and it is the special momento photo following their annual Semaphore Greek Festival that won them the prize.  The members assembled for what is a pretty spectacular photo with ages ranging from young babies to the eldest in their mid-90s.

The annual Festival, held in January, has over 277 volunteers.  A cultural celebration of the Greek Community is well attended with 38,000 people over its 2 days.  They keep everything very traditional with food, drinks and dancing throughout the festival.  A great opportunity for the community to gather and connect.  Next January is set to be bigger and better than ever as they celebrate 40 years of the festival.

The Community and Church was established in 1959 and the Club was formed in 1975 out of a need for Greek immigrants heading to Australia to gather together, to share across the generations the Greek traditions and to stay connected with their heritage.  Club President John is very proud of what they have built.  A place where people including the children WANT to volunteer.  They have a Greek school with 180 children / Youth Group / Dance Group plus their annual festival.

I’ll be back for more coffee and the olive bread… thank you for your hospitality.
