Beer Excise Freeze

Beer Excise Freeze

Member clubs are advised that today the Albanese Government announced that it would freeze the excise rate on draught beer for 2 years.

The freeze will apply from the next indexation date in August 2025.

Clubs Australia has issued a media release welcoming the Labor Government’s announcement.

The Labor Government has also announced that it will consult with industry on the implementation of the measure.

As the next indexation will occur in the next term of Government, the Labor Government can only enact this change if it forms Government at the coming Federal Election - due to take place in May 2025 at the latest.

While the National Party supports an excise freeze, the Coalition has not adopted this position.

Under the federal excise arrangements, businesses that produce beer and spirits must pay an excise rate based on the volume of alcohol content. The excise rate rises twice per year in line with CPI, with the Government increasing the rate for the 83rd time earlier this month.

Through Clubs Australia, Clubs SA has advocated strongly for an excise freeze on all alcohol sold in clubs. We will continue to advocate for a bipartisan position in support of an alcohol excise freeze.
